Technological developments of moving images: 1869: celluloid film stock, 1870-95: sprocket mechanisms, shutter, film stop device. Louis and auguste lumiere invented cinematographe: 1897: george melies built first film studio in france, 1910: film companies move to hollywood; big studios, 1918: don juan and jazz singer made sound profitable. Hand-color inside frame of the film before advancements. Very first film was done by louis and auguste lumiere: first film was of their workers leaving the factory. Short film because film stock was thick and heavy and difficult to wind into cameras. No sound, in early film there was a piano/orchestra playing live in the background. Frame within a frame (aperture of the camera) Principles of invisible style: the goal is continuity. Filmmaking that doesn"t call attention to itself, pulls the audience in: editing = seamless. Cuts go unnoticed: principle of 4th wall, 180 degree rule.
