SO 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Zero Population Growth, Intersectionality
Document Summary
A critical assessment of who we are and what we do. Society, not people, is the main cause of poverty & other social problems. Society hasn"t provided enough jobs or cushions for at-risk people. Us society made poverty individual problem, all person fault and not a social problem. Sociological imagination turns personal problems into public issues to mitigate change. American society represented by a triangle with 3 circles. The top circle is history - we have developed a uniquely american culture. The bottom left is individual biography- each citizen has a unique biography that determines their place in society, made up of social and class background, gender, gender id, race/ethnicity. Eg. gender dictates/limits you from taking certain careers, like how most teachers are women & how it"s stereotyped as a career for women because women are supposed to be better with kids. Being defined by others as an outsider.
