Seeing the general in particular and strange in the familiar . Macionis defines the sociological perspective as seeing the general in particular, which means looking at the patterns that influence groups of people. It is mentioned here that although people are all individuals, there are many ways in which society helps to shape various groups of people. Our in-class powerpoint provided two further examples of this concept of seeing the general in particular. First, we looked at a depiction of people merging with their smartphones, which is very common at this point in western culture. Another example with the children sitting on the couch looking at a tv and there is a reflection of when it used to be more common to play outside with toys and use the imagination.
