Lecture 25
Constructing Questions to Measure Variables
Other things to consider when designing questions
• Question ordering
o Example:
▪ Which of these do you do weekly?
• Swimming
• Running
• Biking
• Weight lifting
▪ How many hours do you spend exercising each week?
▪ This ordering will make the participants to think about the 4
exercises from the first question
▪ Revision:
• Order questions differently
• Ask the second question first
o They will think about the exercises that they do
instead of the ones listed in the first question
• Questions that are:
o Open-ended
o Close-ended
• Response options
o Balance range of options
o Balance:
▪ Simplicity
▪ Completeness
• What is your race/ethnicity? (choose one)
o White
o Black
o Hispanic
o Asian
• Revision:
o Separate ethnicity and race
▪ Have different categories of:
• Asian
• Hispanic
• Etc.
