Strong theoretical evidence suggested close relationships cannot be built through cmc. Cmc same development opportunities as face to face but 4x longer. Why does it work: reliance on verbal cues text is the most readily (or only) available channel, cmc includes extended time due to the reduced information in each message. Wave 2 hyperpersonal - present ourselves selectively online. Warranting principle- when forming impressions of person x, you give more weight to info that person x can"t control and manipulate (ex: facebook tags, not own posts) Intergroup contact and prejudice- small but consistent to reduce prejudice.
