Children gain a sense of autonomy when parents provide a supporting atmosphere that allows children to achieve self- control without the loss of self-esteem. Shame/doubt: children may come to doubt their abilities if they are subjected to severe punishment or ridicule. Crisis: developing independence and a sense of self-efficacy. Initiative: adventurous, eager to try new tasks, new sense of purposefulness (like going to school, or completely age specific tasks) Guilt: results from overly strict conscience, related to parental threats, criticism, punishment. Time when children come to identify with and learn from their parents.
