Scotistic ontology: three levels of being: individuals or things (= res, concepts, formalities, essences, common natures. There are real less than numerical unites and they are essential metaphysical constituents of individual material things. The quantity of a material substance is the individual difference. Quantity = quantitative properties of a material thing- size, shape spatio-temporal coordinates etc. Socrates and betty white are distinct human beings because they are distinct chunks of matter. Chunks of matter with distinct sizes, shapes, weights, spatio-temporal properties sizes, shapes, weights, spatio-temporal properties. Conditions on the individuating principles: the individual difference must be a positive principle. 2)the individual principle must (somehow) combine with the common natures to make substantial unity.
