Document Summary

Ghazali calls for the prohibition of math - that it was a prerequisite for philosophy. He thought that philosophers were generally evil and corrupting the youth. Ghazali was able to effectively censor philosophy for a certain amount of time. By the time averroes was born, his affect was dwindling. Averroes got to where he was because of his family"s position. The caliph asked him to write commentaries about aristotle"s work. There was no one more secure in their position than any other philosopher. The caliph has to make a concession to a resurgence. So he exiled averroes and burned his books. Because averroes came from a high position, by exiling him and burning his books, the caliph can demonstrate that no one is safe. However, anyone could have been chosen for this. There are 3 opinions in averroes texts that led to his expulsion.
