Document Summary

Because nacl is a 3d lattice ionic compound! Nacl bonds are based on electron transfer. Water is made of neutral atoms and has individual molecules with specific shapes, rather than 3d lattices. Types of chemical bonds: ionic vs covalent bonds. Forming bonds lowers the energy of the system. Atoms/ions make bonds to achieve full outer shells. Weak bonds are broken and replaced with stronger bonds. More correctly, it"s the bond between a cation and anion. Metals have low ionization energies (like to lose energies) Non metals have high ionization energies (don"t like to lose energies) Electrons get transferred from metal to nonmetal so that both species achieve filled outer shells. Can be sharing of electrons of two same nonmetals or two different nonmetals. Nonmetals have relatively high ionization energies and don"t like to lose electrons. So in order to complete their outermost energy level, they share electrons between them.
