Symbolic represents an object or idea but does not constitute it. An example of a sign would be a stop sign. An example of a symbol would be stop lights. Arbitrary words literally mean whatever we choose them to be. Syntactic organization of words; different order in different languages. Loaded language are words with strongly positive or negative. The denotative meanings of loaded language may be emotionally neutral. We make assumptions about people on the basis of their names. Naming practices vary by sex, ethnicity, religion, and age. Credibility is the extent to which others perceive us to be competent and trustworthy. Equivocation - going off on something that does not really answer a question. Different forms of language in a particular group. Slang is using informal words or phrases often understood only by others. Jargon is a slang associated with a particular occupation or profession. Libel is a defamatory statement made in print or some other fixed medium.
