Document Summary

What is the best way of getting info into memory. First info need to be placed into ltm. Encoding is the process of acquiring information and transferring it to ltm. There are a number of way of encoding information into ltm and some are more effective than others. Later information that has been placed into ltm needs to be accessed. Retrieval is the process of transferring information from ltm into working mem. Successful retrieval depends a lot on how well encoding was done. Most mem failures are failures of retrieval. Memories are immediately stores in a stable form. Consolidation is necessary to transform new memories from an initial fragile sate, in which they can be disrupted, to a more permanent state, in which they are resistant to disruption. Sleep is one prominent factor in ensuring good consolidation. Craik and lockhart (1972) proposed that retention depends on levels of processing . Depth of processing can range from shallow to deep.
