PSY 364 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Psy, Social Cognition, Insular Cortex
Document Summary
Neural basis of decision making: patient studies part 2. Ofc appears particularly important when subjective values need to change. Ofc appears to be responsible for assigning subjective values to particular behaviors. Animal models have long suggested that the amygdala plays a role in fear learning. Damage to the amygdala in humans does indeed impair fear learning. One way to measure whether people have learned that the blue square predicts a negative outcome (shock) is to measure skin conductance. Amygdala patients can explicitly describe learning despite an absence of physiological indicators of anticipation. Amygdala patients act like ofc patients, preferring the disadvantageous desks. Performance in the igt doesn"t tell us anything about the decision-making deficits. Amygdala plays a role in shaping decisions based on previous experience. Amygdala appears to be particularly important for learning about and avoiding negative outcomes. Insular cortex is a bit mysterious and definitely does not serve a single function.
