Document Summary

Conflict: whenever one person"s motive, beliefs, opinions, behaviors or goals are interfering or incompatible with another person. We all have certain motives than can bring conflict with ourselves and others. Autonomy vs. connectedness: want to do your own thing but also be wanted. Open vs. closeness: we want to build intimacy but also keep to self. Stability vs. change: want a relationship to stay and be predictable but also want to keep things interesting. Togetherness vs. crowd: sometimes want to be alone with a partner and other times be with others. The source of conflict isn"t important compared to how you fight. 4-year-olds and their mothers fight every 3. 6 minutes. Families eating together fight every 3. 3 fights per meal. 40% of their conflicts are never mentioned to their partner. Drive for the frequency of conflict: younger (lack of experience), more selfish, less strong emotions, neurotic, anxious attachment (perceive more fights and greater conflict), dissimilarity, alcohol.
