Revolution gone backward: 10% of the voting public would say that the confederacy could become part of the union again. They could participate in the federal government once again: however if you fought for the confederacy you could not participate in the government, you couldn"t be government officials, presidential reconstruction, andrew johnson. Lacked political skills that lincoln had: he does not know how to do this, he is responsible for reconstruction, he leads the reconstruction effort, black codes, johnson"s vision, restores all political privileges. They have to pledge allegiance: requirements for reconstruction, abolish slavery, this doesn"t really work, old power soon comes back in the south. They hide things in the black codes: they have secret things going on in the south. This leads to a lot of violence: almost every southern government participated in this. This was a way to control freed slaves. They wanted to regulate the lives of free men: free men"s rights.
