HPE 1003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Emergency Medical Services, Environmental Health, Indirect Costs
Document Summary
In 2010, more than 3 million people died of unintentional injuries world wide. Injury: the result of an act that damages, harms or hurts. Road injuries, fires, falls, drowning, animal contact, poisonings, exposure to forces of nature. Largest causes of unintentional injuries globally: road injury, falling. 90% of burden from injuries fall on low and middle income countries. The number of people who suffer disability annually is greater than those who actually die. For children aged 10-14, road traffic injuries are the 2nd leading cause of death - because they are walking on the road. Risk factors: developmental immaturity (safety rules), parents can"t supervise, exposure to unsafe workplaces, mostly associated with physical activity and vary with socioeconomic status. Higher physical activity - more likely to be injured. Direct costs: medical care, hospitalization, rehab, funeral services. Indirect costs: lost wages, sick leave, disability payments, insurance payouts.
