Age difference: total sleep time decreases throughout lifespan, rem decreases from birth through about 5 years and after that it gets stabilize, from adolescence onwards, delta sleep decreases. About 1/3rd of the adults suffer from insomnia: 6-10% people meet the criteria of the insomnia disorder, risk factor: It is seen more commonly in women and it increases with the age. In the same day, repeated periods of overwhelming sleepiness, falling asleep ( sleep attack ) or napping. Narcolepsy + cataplexy cases have hypocretin deficiency in about 90% cases. Leading hypothesis: auto-immune attack destroys hypocretin-producing cells: treatment: Abnormal behaviors, experiences or psychological events during or related to sleep. Has two main examples: rem sleep behavior disorder (rbd): During rem sleep, when we experience muscular paralysis that prevents our muscles from moving; the people with rbd do not experience muscular paralysis and they are able to move and act out their dreams.
