Document Summary
Soc271 lecture 12 - differential association & subculture theories. Differential association: when one witnesses another"s action. They might internalize this action (act similarly in the future) There are more pro-deviance definitions and associations than anti-deviance. Usually exposed by example, what sees others around them doing. Not with whom or what, but with what definition one associate with. We"re all exposed to both anti and pro definitions of deviance (professor). Example: a parent is given extra change at a store, and they keep it without saying anything. This sends the message to the child that, sometimes theft is okay. Even if previously told never steal" by the same parent. Anti-deviance association: acting in conformity to societal norms. Example: someone is robbing your neighbor, and your roommate calls the police. You are given an example of what to do in this situation: to not steal, and to enforce social norms. Differential social (or group) organization: inherently more deviant than average society.
