People conceive of cmc as task oriented. Less time is spent being friendly with other people, and more time devoted to completing the task. Also, what little non-task oriented communication there was on the internet was vulgar and profane. We thought people were just going online to achieve a goal or complete a task. More social interaction among online groups than previously thought. Predicts that human beings are driven to develop relationships. It takes longer than ftf (face to face interactions), due to restricted cues. Early studies did not give individuals enough time. When told that they would remain friends with anonymous others that they were communicating with, individuals engaged in more interpersonal communication. There are some factors that can make it impersonal. But there are many instances where cmc can be interpersonal.
