Today"s lecture will not be in the midterm. The function of the cardiovascular system is to deliver oxygen. Made of 3 components - the heart, the blood vessels, and the blood itself. Blood vessels are conduits - they allow the blood to flow. Heart: cardiac muscle (different classification of muscle) The brain does not initiate the activity of the heart, but can increase or decrease it depending on the situation. When your heart relaxes, it fills with blood and when it contracts it squeezes out blood. The right atrium receives blood from the body, then to the right ventricle. (deoxygenated blood) From the right ventricle, it moves to the lungs to become oxygenated blood. Then the blood travels from the lungs to the left atrium, to the left ventricle, then to the rest of the body as oxygentated blood. Valves connect all the chambers in order to prevent backflow of blood.
