PSYCH 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: False Memory, Short-Term Memory, Sensory Memory
Document Summary
Two guys walk thru door and switch people, old guy doesn"t notice. Just bc we see something, doesn"t mean it"s in memory. Encoding: info gets into our brains in a way that allows it to be stored. Storage: info is held in a way that allows it to later be retrieved. Echoic memory--auditory sensory register: we very brie y capture a sensory memory, analagous to an echo or image, of all the sensations we take it. Used to keep track of what is currently relevant. Short duration: we"re good at memorizing like 7 ish chunks of info. Chunks: info grouped into a meaningful unit: words are chunks of letters, working memory. Stm= space used to hold info required: wm = manipulation of that info for whatever task you are doing, maintenance (repeating what you just saw over and over again) vs. elaborative rehearsal (giving something more meaning) Long term memory (ltm: memory that persists over time without conscious activation.
