Document Summary

Cells can spread to other parts of the body. Accumulation of multiple mutations (process can take decades) 5-20 mutations needed for cell to become problematic. Some cells benefit from the mutations develop faster and take advantage of their environment cells can then spread. Cells secrete acid that breaks down the epithelium leave the primary tumor enter the blood stream adhere to another part of the body. Always evolving to become more cancerous and resistant to drugs. Cancer becomes malignant when it spreads: ability to stimulate their own growth (cell dvision) Normal cells cannot divide in the absence of signals from the environment. Typically when cells reach a certain age, they undergo apoptosis themselves or cells around them kill the cell; cancer cells cannot self destruct: develop limitless replicative potential. For a given cell type there is a limit to the number of times they can divide.
