Married, remarried, possibly more than once or twice. Married to someone for long time, then being widowed. 80% of elderly women will experience death of partner, higher likelihood of being widowed, spend on average 20 years as widow/single individual. Widowed men often remarry-90% remarry within 1-2 years, enormous pool of eligibles. Re-balancing the boundary between work and family retirement issues: don"t retire at same time, asynchronized. Men retire first, force women: puts strain on relationship, easier if couple likes one another, has loving, harmonious relationship. Some couples married 40-50 years may not really love one another: work is a buffer-time spent together and apart, choice is the most important predictor to the adjustment over retirement. Whether or not partners are choosing to retire or not. Choice is diminishing, may be forced to retire. Coping with the physical changes of aging behavioral slowing: martial relationships start out being between two physically able bodied spouses.
