Family in Later Life
Marital Trajectory
- long term long time married individuals (divorce rates aren’t as high as we portray them
to be)
- remarried but possibility remarried once or twice
- married but widowed (80% of women may experience the death of their partner,
widowed women spent a long time being married than widowed and will spend on
average almost 20 years as a widowed, single individual, men who are widowed are
very likely to be remarried
MARITAL ISSUES -
● Re-balancing the boundary between work and family – retirement issues
○ for married couple who have been living their life together, when you no longer
have work consuming your time, puts you in a position where you have to figure
out what you have to do with your time together, adjustment is easier when
couples like one another (can’t assume a couple really likes one another
according to the years they’re spent together)
○ *****choice is the most important predictor of the adjust to retirement****
■ marital issues around retirement is whether they’re choosing if they
retirement, more and more people into the future are going to be forced
into retirement
● Coping with the physical changes of aging – behavioral slowing
○ marital relationships start out with two physically able individuals → once starts to
slow → strain relationship dynamics potentially (ex: doesn’t hear well, tension in
relationship, lead to misunderstandings until you get a hearing aid), changes in
sexual relationship, changes in recreational activities, sexual activity is an
important part of elderly people’s lives
● Frailty within the marital system – marital legacies and management of frailty
○ Conjugal Identities and the Role – Counter-role Distinction
■ Caregiver – Care-receiver
○ as partner becomes frail, shifts marital relationship from caregiver to care
receiver, not always a welcome transition, not one people have control over, “not
only I was your husband, now I’m also a care receiver” more willing to be a
caregiver if I love you and I care for you in the first place
Factors Influencing Role Transitions (has a lot to do with if the role is desired and has to do
with legacy of relationship)
● Knowledge of the role
● Whether or not the role is desired or wanted
