Women"s health issues, reproductive cancers, infertility and menstrual disorders. Most common female reproductive cancer: endometrial (uterine) cancer. Most often seen in women between 50-65 years old. Risk factors (most significant r/t hormone imbalance): Slow growing/ good prognosis if diagnosed early stage. *** cardinal sign: abnormal uterine bleeding (esp. post-menopausal) Late signs: mucosanguinous discharge, low back pain, low pelvic pain. 90% diagnosed by fractional curettage a scraping of endocervical area and endometrium. Histologic evaluation of grade and stage (extent) (endometrial bioposy) Stages: stage i (tumor limited to endometrium) Other tests may be done to determine spread of cancer. Combined estrogen/progesterone pill offers some protective benefit. 2nd most common female reproductive cancer: ovarian. ***more deaths than other female genital tract cancer. Family history of ovarian or uterine cancer. Possibly post-menopausal estrogen use > 10 years. Pregnancy / oral contraceptives / breastfeeding protective benefits. An ovary > 5cm requires eval. with laparoscopy / laparotomy. More aggressive screening for women with brca1 mutation.
