LING 50 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Markedness, Trans Woman, Genderqueer
Document Summary
Understanding of biology is still socially constructed. Socially constructed, culturally specific, individual (sense of self, vis-a-vis society) Attraction to others (understood through gender identity) Gender seen as determined by biology, so considered to be the same. Linguistically differentiating the two reinforces basic understanding that someone"s biological characteristics and their gender identity are not the same. Social identity category with which you identify (e. g. , non-binary, cis male, trans woman) How we convey our gendered sense of self to others (gender identity + sexuality + ethno-racial identity + social class + ) How i express myself visually does not determine how i identify myself . Social positions, behaviours, attitudes considered acceptable for people of a particular gender. Ex: speaking english (in the us), short hair men, long hair women. Binary gender, cis, normative masculinity/famininity, heteros, monogamy. Differs from what is default, status quo, hegemonic. Somewhat marked (middle ground) ** markedness is scalar!! Whatever existing term is modified is the unmarked form.
