Document Summary
Cells are smallest living units in bodies of living organisms. Cells have basic survival functions through organelles: obtain and use nutrients. Phospholipids: amphipathic (hydrophilic outside, hydrophobic inside the phospholipid bilayer) dynamic arrangement (to allow passage of materials) Cholesterol found in tails of bilayer (inside hydrophobic area) forms structural integrity of plasma membrane. Glycolipids found in layer facing extracellular fluid (outside phospholipid bilayer) provides cellular adhesion and recognition. Peripheral: do not interact with bilayer, exist in extracellular fluid. Plasma membrane: provides protective barrier cellular communication regulate movement of substances in and out of cell selectively permeable integral proteins are channels that assist in entrance of impermeant molecules carriers are passive, pumps are active. Simple diffusion (pass directly through bilayer) = lipid-soluble products, smaller in size. Osmosis (diffuse through bilayer) = water molecules. Facilitated diffusion (integral protein helps pass through) = water soluble molecules.
