ICT 410 Lecture 4: Transparency
Document Summary
Transparency is important to any open and free society. People do not want to be monitored. Open government laws, freedom of information laws, and corporate disclosure laws. Corporations and governments do need some secrecy but the more they can be open then the more we can decide whether we trust them. Privacy policies should provide some of the above information. Transparency is needed in the algorithms that judge us on the basis of our data. Ex: publish the code or explain how they work. People are much more likely to be comfortable with surveillance if we know some of the answers. We cannot assess the fairness of tsa algorithms when selecting some of us for special screening . Predictive policing algorithms (who to bring in for questioning?) Institutional transparency reduces the power imbalance that good. Institutional surveillance increased the power imbalance that"s bad. Advocating for individual privacy over forced surveillance. Advocating government and corporate transparency over institutional secrecy.
