Document Summary

Mitochondria- outer and inner membrane, intermembrane space and mitochondrial matrix. Also involved in the synthesis, modiicaion, and breakdown of several types of cellular molecules. Can also generate heat in brown fat cells. The more membrane there is, the greater the producion of atp. Three membranes: outer, inner, and a thylakoid stacked together in stacks called granum. Mitochondria and chloroplasts are derived from ancient symbioic relaionships. Endosymbiosis- a smaller species lives symbioically inside a larger species. Peroxisomes- do not have their own dna, found in all eukaryoic cells. Capturing and using energy- metabolism- sum total of all chemical reacions that occur within an organism. Also refers to speciic chemical reacions at the cellular level. Chemical reacions- 2 factors govern fate of a chemical reacion. Direcion- reacions can move to the right or the let. Many cells use atp to drive reacions in the direcion we need them to go to. Rate- catalysts called enzymes can speed up the reacion rate.
