Document Summary

Metabolism - sum total of all chemical reactions that occur within an organism. 2 factors govern fate of a chemical reaction: Direction- many cells use atp to drive reactions in 1 direction. Rate- catalysts called enzymes can speed the reaction rate. 2 laws of thermodynamics: first law, law of conservation of energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed, second law, transfer or transformation of energy from one form to another increases entropy- degree of disorder in a system. The higher the energy shell/farther away from the nucleus an electron is, the more potential energy an electron has. Exergonic reaction reaction that gives off energy. Energetically favorable- don"t need to put energy in negative deltag. Endergonic reaction- reaction where energy is put in. Have to couple smaller endergonic reaction to a larger exergonic reaction. Catalyst- agent that speeds up the rate of chemical reaction. Activation energy- initial input of energy to start a reaction.
