Document Summary

Meninges, cerebrospinal fluid are shock absorbers: cushions the brain and spine from injury or trauma, meninges consists of, dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater, elastic cushion serves as shield that protects cns from trauma (impact, injury, etc. ) Cerebrospinal fluid (csf) bathes the brain: reduces weight of brain (95%, also found in ventricles, allow nutrients and blood vessels access to the brain and assist in function, helps transport waste away from brain. Lateral ventricle: third ventricle, cerebral aqueduct, fourth ventricle, central canal, filled with cerebrospinal fluid, assist in buoyancy and nutritional integrity of brain. Immune function: primary immune cells specific to cns, pro and anti-inflammatory function, reduction of inflammation. Induce inflammation: carry around nutrients, release signal molecules, cytokines, signal to other immune cells, float in csf, carry around nutrients, assist in communication between cells. Intracranial pressure: needs to be kept at certain level for proper functioning, csf leakage causes rapid changes in pressure, can lead to lesions in brain.
