People are well fed, indicating the belief that beer is healthier than gin. Natives had no experience with alcohol until europeans arrived; heavy drinkers. Arab cultures discovered how to distill alcohol and make it much stronger. Temperance movement social movement determined to outlaw the sale and consumption of alcohol began organizing in the 1800s and was built by church members. Required changing the u. s. constitution twice; lasted from 1920-1933 you could make alcohol for personal use and buy alcohol without penalty. Bootleggers- sold overpriced product, paid no taxes on it. Organized crime- flourished and people began losing respect for the government as it failed to enforce its laws.
