PSY 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Olfaction, Lingual Papilla, Stimulus Modality
Document Summary
Gustation (taste) as an example system: transduction, from sensation to perception, individual differences. Four elementary tastes; democritus taste due to different shapes (sweet=round, salty= isosceles triangle) Structure of molecule influences the taste that we experience. Creating a neural stimulus from a physical stimulus. Olfaction: chemicals in air: from sensation to perception. Different sensory qualities are caused by different neural structures. Today: labeled-line model (specific set of taste buds that only respond to certain tastes) In taste: different sensory qualities are five basic tastes; different neural structures are taste receptors. Things that are sweet, generally have the same molecular structure. There is not a way to map taste on the tongue. We use the different tastes and combine to turn it into flavor.
