Document Summary

Goals of lecture: to introduce the problem of antibiotic resistance and strategies for controlling the evolution of antibiotic resistance anti-infectives chemicals that are administered to individusals to destroy, damage or inhibit parasites. Antimicrobials refer to anti-infectives that are used to control pathogens. Antibiotics, narrowly defined, refer to anti-infectives that are used to control bacteria; however, the term is often used broadly as a synonym to antimicrobials. Antivirals refer to anti-infectives that are used to control viruses. Antihelminthics refer to anti-infectives that are used to control. The discussion below will use the terms antibiotics or antimicrobials generally to illustrate issues that are generally relevant to anti-infectives. Evolutionary effects can depend on many aspects of the individuals being treated and the organisms that are exposed to the antibiotics. Variation of original populations of exposed organisms:if resistant variants are present in the population of microbes exposed to antibiotics, evolution of antibiotic resistance will occur more rapidly than if resistant variants are absent.
