Theatre as art: aesthetics = the study of beauty (we have an innate sense of beauty, looking at how the art is contracted and the visual impact. Theatre as a ritual: ritual = culture, consistent, tradition, sacred, common bond, community, religion. A custom or practice in dow with cultural and/or personal meaning. Deines a community/culture > part of a social life of the community, expressing of community held values, makes us see beliefs and makes them more abstract, understand a culture more. Shape individual identity > give people a sense of their place within a community, places expectations of how they should behave/ accomplish. Rites of passage (ex. graduation > give weight to the idea, the ceremony solidiies that you are someone diferent now. Makes meaning > helps you make the abstract real (victor turner) Connects people to the past > path that is being followed that many people before you have taken.
