Document Summary

Protective factors help children and families successfully adapt and cope with life"s challenges, but must be viewed within the context of their individual cultures and developmental stages. Having this awareness enhances the family support practitioner"s ability to support the family in furthering their capacity building of resilience. Keeping this in mind, for this module, protective factors are broken into six categories: proactive orientation. Taking initiative in one"s one life and their feeling of effectiveness; self-regulation. Having control over one"s behaviours or actions; proactive parenting; connection and attachment the desire to belong; school achievements and special talents being actively engaged; and, community availability of supportive relationship outside the home. By providing opportunities for families to build on these factors, we all become more resilient. Below you will find information and websites that provide strategies that enhance resilience and build capacity.
