Background and context

Metabolism refers to all of the processes that occur within a cell in order to consume and create energy. The two forms of metabolism are catabolism and anabolism. Anabolism is the process by which a cell uses energy to create complex compounds from simpler molecules. Catabolism is the process by which cells break down complicated molecules into simpler ones in order to release energy.
