A population is the entire group of subjects under study. It is the group about which the researcher wants to draw a conclusion. The population size can be infinite.
A sample is a subset of a population. The population sizes are usually very large. It becomes difficult to handle a population so a sample which is smaller in size is drawn and analysis is done based on the sample. From these results, inference can be drawn about the population as the sample is a representation of the population, only the difference is samples are finite in size.
