Background and context

The dominant generation is haploid in bryophytes (i.e. liverworts and mosses) so that the gametophyte includes what one understands as the main plant. The opposite is true for tracheophytes (i.e. vascular plants), in which the diploid generation is dominant and the sporophyte includes the main plant.
