Refers to unions becoming more involved in politics by mobilizing around social/political issues like the environmental, anti-war, women"s movement. Became more popular in the 1990s as a consensus grew that for unions to be credible in public they would have to be credible with leftist groups. The hope was unions would increasingly be seen as the swords of justice , a tool to assist activists in achieving their cause o. Significant because it created tensions within the union and sometimes between a union and a movement as they may have opposing interests. Membership does not always agree with a cause a union is supporting and may dislike that the union is spending funds on issues not directly related to the workplace o: green jobs & caw, luxury campaigns.
