Document Summary

Briefly define the technical terms used in the lectures. Chondrocranium, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum: in fish, this functions mainly as an anti-shortening device: wave of muscle movement on one side causes the tail to switch sides and vice versa this offsets the myomere contractions on each side. This could only occur if the vertebral column was present. Briefly describe vertebral structure, making reference to the following structures: centrum; prezygapophysis; postzygapophysis; hemal arch; neural arch; transverse process; spinal process; intervertebral disc. The vertebral structure in tetraopds is slightly different to that in humans. The spinal cord runs through the neural canal, which is a space located inside the neural arch. The neural arch is located on top of a large body called the centrum. The intervertebral disk is made of fibro-cartilage and connects two vertebrae together. The intervertebral foramen is the hole between two connected vertebrae and the spinal cord runs through it.
