Otto loewi and henry dale won the nobel prize in 1936 for the idea that neurotransmitters are electrical. Dale gave us the name synapse (where neurons come together). Dale"s principle: a neuron is only going to use one chemical messenger. Although this idea is not really true, it did give us a means by which we name. 5 steps in neurotransmission neurons (e. g. serotonin neuron makes serotonin). These are the steps a neurotransmitter goes through to transmit messages. Classic neurotransmitters all go through similar steps. Are part of a cycle (and therefore are not complex).
