In every social encounter we entrust our self-esteem to the other. One"s perception of what is true or real is shaped by the symbols and symbol-manipulating institutions of the tribe. This test is killing me : what is true is what school i go to, what my parents say, etc. If i can"t see through the rules, i only see the rules. I limit the way i think by not questioning my metaphors. Person centered communication: when we tailor and adapt our messages to a specific person, take their feelings into account, keep their situation in mind, and attempt to accomplish some goal of our own. Information accessibility model: people make judgements with the most recent or accessible information. Sequence of comforting: validate the person"s feelings, support the person, offer advice. Cognitive appraisal: the way we interpret a situation. Cognitive reappraisal: when we reinterpret a situation in light of new information. Sequence: primary appraisal, secondary appraisal, emotion, action tendency.
