Human beings have a need to expand their own life force and meaning beyond themselves- the heroic drive : 1. Achievement- we want to achieve and accomplish something: 2. Peak moment- allowing ourselves to be caught up in the moment; typically had through art, religion, sex, or athletics: if we do one of these and not the other we are cheating ourselves. We want to expand beyond our own lifetimes in some way- we have a need to deny death. The human condition presents everyone with a meaning problem. Wasteland - just goes through the motion: a person who shrinks from the expansion of their life force, who pulls back from embodying heroism, lives the life of the wasteland . Yet, in our culture, especially in modern times, the heroic seems too big for us, or we too small for it .
