All knowledge is filtered through a paradigm or a set of paradigms currently dominated within a particular discipline or field. The conscious and unconscious questions, assumptions and beliefs that the researcher brings to the research endeavor serves the initial basis for an ontological position: there are 3 major ontological positions in qualitative research: Positivism posits that the social world is patterned and casual relationships can be discovered and tested via reliable strategies. Interpretative position assumes that the social world is constantly being constructed through group interactions and thus social reality is constantly being constructed through group interactions.
