Dr. roos examines the politics of the salon, looking in-depth at the events leading to and during the. In terms of gaining a position on a jury, one had to receive a good deal of vote from the electors who were either members of the legion of honor or the academy or medal winners. As such those who did(cid:374)"t share (cid:272)o(cid:374)ser(cid:448)ati(cid:448)e (cid:448)ie(cid:449)s (cid:449)ere less likel(cid:455) to (cid:271)e ele(cid:272)ted. Ca(cid:374)didates for the jur(cid:455) (cid:449)ere grouped i(cid:374)to lists by political opinion/sympathies and gender. Nieuwererke and any exhibitor who wished to help would count the votes. The majority (198 of 304) of the voting population were painters. Only 3/4th of the jury was elected, the remainder were usually filled in by the same group of curators, amateurs and art critics, year after year as their opinions satisfied the administration. The critics would write for prominent publications which would provide the administration with a base of support.
