The protests of 1867 succeeded in putting enough pressure on nieuwerkerke for him to change the rules the next year. In addition to the members of the institute, the legion of honor, and previous medal winners, all artists that had previously exhibited were now able to participate in the election of the year(cid:859)s jury. The o(cid:374)ly artists that (cid:272)ould(cid:374)(cid:859)t (cid:449)ere those (cid:449)ho(cid:859)d (cid:374)e(cid:448)er (cid:271)ee(cid:374) a(cid:272)(cid:272)epted at the alo(cid:374). This was the most liberal set of rules since the second republic, and resulted in all the modernists, save. Previously, courbet the only medal winner among them was able to do so. Yet some level of control still remained as nieuwerkerke and chennevi res reduced the painting jury to 12/48 (fewer than the 18/52 of 1866) while expanding and adding more people to the other sections.
