The salon of 1866 defined the modernist art and the (cid:373)ode(cid:396)(cid:374)ist a(cid:396)tist(cid:859)s relationship to the salon and was when the group that would be known as the impressionists became to come together. The members of this group were at different points in their careers: courbet a 25 year salon veteran and edouard manet only 3 years in and gaining a reputation as one to watch. Mile zola published the first of his salon reviews this year in l" v (cid:374)e(cid:373)e(cid:374)t, a parisian newspaper. Thought courbet did gain much popularity with the public after 1855, his works remained rebellious and provocative. 1849,1857, and 1861 he was given a rappel de m daille (second-class medal).
