ENVIRSC 1A03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 17: Cyclogenesis, Jet Stream, Polar Front
Document Summary
Environmental science 1a03: midlatitude storms, midlatitude storms. The polar front theory has been developed to describe the interactions between dissimilar air masses and the related aspects of the mid-latitude cyclone. this is also called the, norwegian front model. Midlatitude cyclones also bring abrupt changes in wind, temperature and sky conditions. The idealized life cycle of a midlatitude cyclone in the northern hemisphere is based on the polar front theory. As the life cycle progresses the system move eastward or north eastward in a dynamic fashion. Cyclogenesis: describes the formation of a midlatitude cyclone, it occurs along the boundaries separating the cold easterlies from warmer westerlies. During the frontal wave a disturbance in the polar front generates a wave like movement along the front. A low pressure area forms and due to the counter clockwise flow of colder air, migrates behind a developing cold front. The open wave is associated to strong cyclonic flow.
