Problems can exist in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, A basic distinction has been made between those who have difficulty with expressive language and those who have problems with receptive language. Differences are also drawn between impairments in speech sound disorder and language disorder. Overall range of specific language impairments in the range of 3-7% Boys are widely reported as having higher rates than girls. Higher rates have been noted in children from low ses. Language disorders usually appear by age 3-4, but mild difficulties may not be identified until later. Improvement can occur over time and language abilities can reach the normal range. Phonological problems are common during the preschool years, but about 75% of mild to moderate cases remit by age 6.
