PSYCH 3CC3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Soft Sell, False Confession, Confirmation Bias
Document Summary
Confession evidence is a prosecutor"s most potent weapon. Mid 20th century - physically coercive techniques were used to extract confessions. Guilty people are unlikely to confess, so trickery is a necessary evil to extract a confession. Interrogation techniques vary by region (england and wales are much less coercive than north america) Non-custodial - happens outside of the interrogation room. Undercover police officers - pose as members of a crime organization. Attempt to lure the suspect into a gang. Suspect has to commit minor crimes for a small reward. Must confess to a serious crime (under investigation) before he can secure the "higher level job" Not used as frequently, but still used often. Prior to 2004 - mr. big technique had been used 350 times in canada. No - confession gets them in trouble for the offense before the technique, not the minor crimes during. Reasonable use of police trickery that is approved by canadian courts.
